The Theological Education by Extension College was created under the auspices of the South African Council of Churches and started operating on 1st April 1976. As an ecumenical venture the College sought to provide accessible, contextual theological education for women and men who otherwise were denied access to higher education or theological education given the prevailing political and church attitudes of that time.
Offering accredited programmes that cater to varied educational ability and ministerial objectives, the College’s outcomes-based approach to theological education equips people within their local context. There they remain within their circles of relationship, responsibility and ministry while applying their learning in their local congregational and social contexts.
With a four-decade track record, the College continues to pioneer access to education while extending its reach to isolated and disadvantaged students for the equipping of God’s people in those places. With the support of local and international partners the College’s work is endorsed annually through rigorous quality assurance and external examination – which sees its graduates continuing in further studies, successful church ministries, and enriched discipleship.
